Tax Planning and Representation
Recognizing that taxes impact every aspect of the business environment, our tax attorneys work closely with all of the firm's practices. We review the federal, state and local tax consequences of a variety of business transactions including mergers and acquisitions, purchases and sales of real estate and other property, and capital market transactions. We represent clients in legislation projects to change state and local tax laws, in the tax planning stage of transactions and in connection with federal and state tax audits, administrative appeals and court appeals in both civil and criminal tax cases.
Our tax practice also includes:
- Cross-border business transactions and investments (in-bound and out-bound)
- Negotiation of state and local tax incentives
- Tax negotiations regarding the design of tax regulations and tax rulings
- Taxation of financial institutions and financial products
We have been pioneers in the practice of state tax law. Our state tax lawyers have been recognized in Connecticut and the United States through serving as authors in and editors of nationally recognized state tax journals, as speakers at conferences of business and professional groups and as leaders within the tax sections of both the American and state bar organizations. Our state tax practice includes representation and advice in income, franchise, sales and property taxes and numerous industry-specific state taxes. Our practice involves:
- Representation of individuals and businesses before state taxing authorities
- Conducting tax litigation
- Advising clients regarding state tax compliance and business structuring
- Designing for our clients favorable tax legislation, including tax incentives
- Assisting businesses in securing existing tax and financial incentives
